Just like so many people are doing their thing to "Be Green" we wanted to do more than just recycle and drive a Hybrid car. Creating our own garden space seemed to be the next thing to do to be more "green", self sufficient, and environmental. Glen and I both thought this to be a great idea....
So, in May, Glen drives off to the nearest lumber yard, returning with a truckload of timber. I think they are 6x6 in full tree lengths. Those are some really SOLID pieces of lumber. Heavy too. I noticed the truck look relieved just be be unloaded.
By the first week of June the Garden was built. High enough to be easy to simply reach in and weed or harvest. We're into comfort over here. Certainly cannot expect that we would bend over to weed! We get dirt and plants, and place each in order in the garden frame. Self watering garden, too, with the hose under the mulch, and on an automatic timer. We check each day to be sure our little plants are growing.
July rolls through and the first vegetables start to appear. Foolishly we anticipate a wonderful harvest.
It's August now, and reality has set in. We're battling critters for garden goods. Sneaky thieves slink through in the dead of night and pilfer through till the garden is bare. It's not often that I will admit that Bambi sets my teeth on edge, but there it is. Bambi is more fleet of foot than I am, and can sniff out a ripe tomato at 50 yards. Bambi likes Green Peppers, too, but jalapeno peppers, not so much. For the first time in my life I need to consider.......
Is hunting considered a "Green" activity???
